For me, the wood work really started when I found a book which showed the way of building decorative locks out of wood. That fascinated me. I bought the book for $5,000!!! I
must say that it came with a bench saw, a scrool saw, a planer, 3 sanders,
...
Thereafter I bought several books on various do-it-yourself projects; musical boxes, characters, Christmas cribs, etc.
Back to the locks.. They are entirely made out of wood even if they are just decorative, they are functional; they open with a key. The internal mechanism is also made of wood. No metal parts are used.
Of course, they are not made to lock the shelter of the garden! Some use them as decorative part, others to close a cupboard or a trunk, etc.
I really like to play with colors but do not like to paint or to dye. This is why I use nearly 40 different wood species. You can see some of those in the page "Choice of woods ".
Here are four models that I currently manufacture, wouldn't they make an original gift?
